Tried and True Parenting Tips

     Encouraging the Reluctant Reader

My daughter is rather uncertain in her oral reading skills and I’ve found that when we read together it is best if we take turns reading.  This reduces her frustration, lets her hear the proper rhythm and pronunciation, and keeps the story moving along – thus honding her interest longer.

Also, I encourage her to read out loud to her younger siblings or to neighbor children.  This gives her a “legitimate” reason to read at a lower level and helps strengthen her fluency and confidence.  And as an added bonus, the younger children really enjoy having a “big kid” read to them and it helps build their reading and listening skills too.
